1. ... What does no added sugar mean?
No added sugar means that whilst some naturally occurring sugar will be in the product (from the raw material eg. milk and cocoa) we did not add any to the product. To get the delicious taste of Canderel chocolate, we used a blend of bulk sweetener, fibre and intense sweeteners instead of sugar which give all the taste but have fewer calories.
2. ... Which sweeteners does it contain and are they safe?
Canderel chocolate contains Aspartame and Maltitol which have both proven safe for human consumption. Aspartame has been approved by health and regulatory authorities in 100 countries throughout the world, such as the World Health Organisation, the European Union's Scientific Committee for Food, and the United States Food & Drug Administration. Aspartame is one of the most thoroughly tested food ingredients in our food supply, having undergone more than 200 scientific studies over a 30 year period. Aspartame is approximately 200 times sweeter than sugar. Aspartame does not promote tooth decay.
(Note that aspartame is a source of phenylalanine, and is therefore not suitable for people with phenylketonuria).
Maltitol is a reduced calorie bulk sweetener with sugar-like taste and sweetness. Its stability, high sweetness, and structure make it suitable for a variety of reduced-calorie, reduced-fat and sugar-free foods. Maltitol does not promote tooth decay.
Maltitol is a member of a family of bulk sweeteners known as polyols or sugar alcohols. It has a pleasant sweet taste which is remarkably similar to sucrose. Maltitol is about 90% as sweet as sugar, non-cariogenic, and significantly reduced in calories. Maltitol is especially useful in the production of sweets, including sugarless hard candies, chewing gum, chocolates, baked goods and ice cream.
3. ... Who can eat Canderel chocolate?
Canderel chocolate is suitable for all except those who suffer from Phenylketonuria and as detailed in Q5, Q8 and Q9.
Canderel chocolate is suitable for adults and children over two years of age.
4. ... Does it have any side effects?
Canderel chocolate contains Maltitol, a sugar alcohol. When consumed in moderation, sugar alcohols should not cause any digestive side effects. However, some people are more sensitive and may experience some side effects at lower levels. One of the reasons that sugar alcohols are lower in calories and carbohydrates compared to sugar is that they are digested and absorbed in a different way.
In the process of digesting sugar alcohols, some digestive side effects can occur, including flatulence (gas), colic, and diarrhea. Severity of the side effects will vary based on the individual, and the amount of product that is eaten. These side effects are generally similar for all sugar alcohols.
Due to the presence of sugar alcohols in our products, we have included a warning statement on the package indicating excessive consumption may cause laxative effect.
Children should consume Canderel chocolate in moderation. Because of their smaller body size and their more sensitive digestive systems, children may experience the laxative effects of sugar alcohols in smaller quantities than adults, and their total consumption should be limited.
